TRIGGER WARNING

This is a Scottish anti-rape PSA that is a direct response to blaming a rape victim for dressing like a slut. What do you think? Is it effective?

Never have I seen such an effective video in my life… and it’s only 30 seconds long. Definitely, 100% watch and reblog this.

Blackfish - Trailer

Beyond the lies, beneath the deception, the truth will surface.

Magnolia Pictures has debuted the trailer for the chilling Sundance documentary Blackfish, directed Gabriela Cowperthwaite, about orcas in captivity.

Holy shit.

OKAY, WE NEED TO REBLOG THE FUCK OUT OF THIS. EVEN IF YOU’RE NOT AN ANIMAL PERSON, YOUR FOLLOWERS NEED TO SEE THIS. ESPECIALLY DURING THE HEIGHT OF VACATION SEASON. DO NOT SUPPORT SEA PARKS WITH CAPTIVE WHALES. IT’S NOT ENVIRONMENTAL PROPAGANDA (I can’t believe I even used those words) IT’S A REAL ISSUE AND IT’S NOT A MATTER OF PROOF, IT’S A MATTER OF COVERING IT UP AND IGNORING IT!

I can get having fish or crustaceans but seriously, who actually thought having a whale would be a good idea

this is really, really important to watch and think about. i also want to pre-empt any sort of antagonizing the usage of the word “psychosis” and “psychotic” that’re used in this trailer. i was jarred at first, but when i thought about it, i realized it’s being applied correctly.

orcas are highly intelligent creatures, as are many other sea mammals. they are very, very capable of being traumatized just like humans are.  from what i understand about the process of capturing/putting whales in captivity, it’d be near impossible to escape those experiences completely neurotypical. there’s some deeply fucked up shit that goes into this process, and i am certain that whales and other sea mammals suffer from at least a little bit of PTSD.

animals in general are capable of suffering from the effects of trauma. the most commonly known example that comes to mind are pitbulls. animals aren’t just mindless playthings that are for our own human amusement—they have the capacity to think and feel and have psychological processes of their own. to argue “they’re just animals, why should we care” is busted as fuck. as it’s said in the trailer, “how would you feel if you were stuck in a bathtub for 25 years?” factor in the natural environments orcas have been conditioned to live in and the culture shock (i can’t think of any better terminology) that goes into shoving them into a sea park for human entertainment. i can’t speak to the complexity of the minds of dogs, cats, and other domestic animals, but that’s a key difference: they’ve been domesticated for thousands of years. orcas have not.

so yes, i am absolutely sure that orcas suffer from PTSD and potentially have moments of psychosis. they are not exclusively human phenomena.
